England has started its ICC T20 World Cup 2022 campaign with an impressive five-wicket win over Afghanistan at the Perth Stadium on Saturday 22nd October. Indeed, it was an easy win for the Three Lions as their all-around star Sam Curran starred with an outstanding fife to eliminate the opposition. only 112 runs on the board.

Afghanistan’s batsmen never seemed comfortable in the middle and were simply sitting ducks in front of the English bowling attack who made the most of that Perth surface after Jos Buttler called right into the draw and decided to chase.

England made Afghanistan work hard to earn their first points

Asked to bat first, Mohammad Nabi’s team tried to get off to a good start before England not only fell back, but also ended up imposing stranglehold on them from third onwards. From then on the batsmen failed to make much of an impact and at one point it looked like the Afghans were going to be sold cheap with hardly anything on the board.

Nonetheless, the duo of Ibrahim Zadran and Usman Ghani put in a lot of effort to keep the scoreboard going, but without support from the other end, their tackles didn’t get any momentum, which was instrumental in posting a challenging total.

Zadran and Ghani scored a run-a-ball 32 and 30 respectively as Afghanistan was eliminated by 112 in the final. Sam Curran was England’s bowlers’ choice with figures of 5/10 from his 3.4 overs while ben stokes and Mark Wood also got two wickets each and Chris Woakes contributed a scalp.

In response skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales secured a strong start for the Three Lions with a starting position of 35 runs and once the duo were sacked it opened the floodgates for Afghanistan as they responded with quick wickets.

At 81/5, an upset seemed likely enough for England, but unbeaten 21-ball, 29-ball Liam Livingstone carried them comfortably across the line in the penultimate over. For Afghanistan, all bowlers except Azmatullah Omarzai took one wicket each.
